Language

The official language in Maldives is Dhivehi but majority of the population speaks English.

Currency

The local currency is Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR), but Maldivian resort islands are accepting United States dollar (USD).

Religion

The Maldives have a long long Buddhist history and by the mid-12th century Maldivians converted to Islam when Muslim traders introduced Islam.

Mobile Services

Prepaid SIM cards are available at the airport. The SIM cards can be used for local and international calls and for data. WiFi is available in all Tourist Resorts.

Taxes

A Tourism Goods and Service Tax (TGST) of 16% is charged on all goods and services at tourist establishments. A Green Tax of US$ 6.00 per person per day is payable for guests staying at tourist accommodation except guest houses where the Green Tax is US$ 3.00 per person per day.

Covid 19 Requirements

Travel to Maldives:

Maldives reopened its borders to tourists of all nationalities on 15th July 2020.

Recent updates: 

Public Health Emergency regarding the Covid-19 Pandemic has been revoked on 13th March 2022:

All arriving and departing passengers via airports and seaports are required to complete the Traveler Declaration form within 96 hours to the flight time.


PCR result is not mandatory from any passenger during arrival and departure. This applies to unvaccinated travelers as well.

Travel-related quarantine is not required by any traveler.

Travel from Maldives:

If you are travelling from the Maldives, you may be required to take a COVID 19 PCR test and submit additional documentation before departure. Please check the requirements of your specific destination before you travel.

COVID 19 testing requirements

 

It is mandatory that customers confirm the COVID 19 PCR test requirements as per the regulations of the destination country and present the test result certificate at check in. Please contact your resort’s guest relations department for assistance with COVID 19 PCR testing, if required.
